Scripture Memorization

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

2 Timothy 3:16 NLT

I recently began a Scripture memorization course developed by The Navigators, called the Topical Memory System. The System is a clear and simple way to meditate on key Bible verses.

According to the course material, I should experience the following during my work:

  • Freedom from anxiety. Writing God’s promises on your heart helps you live in God’s perfect peace.
  • Triumph over temptation. Scripture memory makes the sword of the Spirit readily available for your battle against sin.
  • Confidence in witnessing. Share the gospel effectively with friends, family, and neighbors using verses you know by heart.
  • Spiritual strength. Sense God’s presence moment by moment and him trust more.

The Navigators is an international, interdenominational Christian ministry established in 1933 as an outreach for followers of Jesus Christ to help others come to know and grow in Him as they navigate through life—a goal embodied by The Navigators motto, “To Know Christ and to Make Him Known.”

I learned the following two verses during the first week:

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." —2 Corinthians 5:17, New King James Version (NKJV)

"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." — Galatians 2:20 NKJV

I chose to memorize the NKJV because my daughter will use this translation when she's old enough to receive a Bible for schoolwork at her Christian school.
